dA Related CR Update: November 2012

Sat Nov 10, 2012, 8:18 AM
Welcome to this month's Community Relations Update for the deviantART Related gallery! :)

Recent News

devID Spooky Make-up Contest!

If you aren't already aware, I held a deviantID Halloween Contest last month. Winners will be announced over the weekend! :eager:

Until then, you can view every entry submitted here.

CSS Community - Where are you?

Over the past few months, myself and a few others have noticed a sharp decline in the amount of proper journal and gallery skins being submitted.

It's so difficult to find a skin to feature when there's nothing new and refreshing being submitted. It is that time of year where everyone gets busy, but the state of the CSS community is quite concerning at the moment.

I've spoken to some deviants and they've said that they don't have any ideas, or they're struggling to find motivation to be creative.

Let's hope this situation improves soon!

Restructure Update

Way back in August, I first announced that the deviantART Related would be undergoing a restructure. I have not forgotten about it! :giggle:

I've changed the proposed structure a handful of times and I've finally come up with one. So let me know what you think! Should anything be changed, edited or renamed? :D

Proposed structure*:
  • Deviant Stamps
  • DeviantMEETS
  • Devious Fun
    • Adoptables
    • Art Memes
      • Blank Templates
      • Filled In Templates
    • My Video Stills
    • LOLFella
    • It's Coming
    • Other
  • T-Shirts, Gear & Prints
    • Community Product Shots
      • Product Shots
      • deviantART Gear
    • Featured Action Shots
    • For Sale
    • Reprinting
    • Sold Out
  • Zines
  • deviantART Birthday
    • 12th Birthday
    • Previous Birthdays
  • deviantART Skins
    • Journal Skins
      • Complete CSS
      • Installable Journal Skins
      • Journal Designs
    • Gallery Skins
      • Complete CSS
      • Gallery Designs
    • Journal & Gallery Packs
    • Journal & Gallery Graphics
  • deviantART Customization
    • User Page Resources
    • Browser Scripts & Extensions
    • User Styles
  • deviantART Visual Suggestions
  • deviantID

I will also be proposing a "deviantART Related" category in the Flash gallery.

*This will not be the final structure, as it has to be run by and approved by Moonbeam13, and she always knows best. ;)

Special Mention

Congrats to former deviantART Related Community Volunteer namenotrequired for being offered an internship with deviantART's Marketing Department. Drop by his page and congratulate him! :)

Hey man, I guess you saw that we were talking about this just now. How's this proposed restructure going along? I'm particularly curious about the proposed separation of gallery/journal skins and user scripts/styles. The way you have these 2 ("deviantART Skins" vs "deviantART Customization") listed here makes so much more sense to me…

It will be going as planned, and hopefully done by the end of the year, but I can't make any promises. :)

Of course, things may change because ^ginkgografix is now the CV, but I'm hoping things will stay similar to what I have layed out here. :D

GAGAAA. Just noticed that the Memes category doesn't allow text submissions, why not :O

I think it might be because the category is mainly for art memes. :o What text submission did you want to submit there?

I don't, but someone brought up that they make meme templates and have no place to put them :o Also there are some writing character memes floating around, it'd be nice to put them somewhere appropriate!

Since my son has started school, instead of having more time to myself as I'd expected I've actually had to have more attention on his school activities and find myself very busy. I am planning another skin, and hope to find time to do more. It has been along time since I made a free skin. Also, there will be the CSS calendar, so some more activity is in the works ;D

Me, too. If you saw my Facebook post then you know what I have planned. I still need to finish that painting for you, too. I'm a terrible procrastinator. But I am of the theory that if I finish something later on I will do it better than I originally would have because my skills would be better  So it shall be more awesome than I original would have made it.

Of course, I can't test the theory as having not finished the thing, how do I know I wouldn't have done it better in the first place ;P

I really like the proposed gallery structure.

I can understand what `ginkgografix said about gallery skins perhaps not warrenting their own gallery but I do think it is worth it for easier browsing. If gallery skins aren't tagged correctly then it can be a real pain to search for them amongst the journal skins. Highlighting gallery CSS with its own gallery might even prompt more people to make them.

As for submitting CSS, I much prefer making simple skins that people can easily customize than perhaps more innovative ones. I find that it can introduce new people to CSS by giving them something uncomplicated to work with so they can get a bit of a grasp on coding. I see what you're saying though and maybe I'll challenge myself to make something a little more exciting. :D

I've never been a journal/gallery CSS creator. I can skin things, but I'm a rather shitty designer. My journal skin is my own creation, and I think it's decent, but it hardly ever changes, aside from small simple changes to colors or whatever :slow:

I may look into making some basic and simple skins. But that stuff takes forever to create, and to be honest, people here are just idiots when it comes to telling them to insert the HTML so it works correctly.

I guess we're in the same boat, I'm a shitty designer too. :highfive: And yeah, it does take quite a bit of time, which is why I haven't been creating any lately.

"and to be honest, people here are just idiots when it comes to telling them to insert the HTML so it works correctly."

True.

I sort of think you must know a bit of CSS and HTML in order to use skins ;)

How on earth are you using transitions in your skin? :D

I agree that some people are idiots when it comes to using HTML so that the skin works correctly. :XD:

I'm an admin of #devBUG, and we were given the ability to use transition (along with some other CSS3 properties) a while back for some testing :giggle: So I can only hope that transition is given to everyone eventually. People can now use gradients, so I'm hoping transitions come soon, if they're not already available now. I posted a journal about this some time back here [link] with some examples.

Ahh! I thought it may've been something to do with that. :P I really hope we can use them soon, because they're so beautiful

Also, I'm planning to propose a new journal HTML structure, to allow for the sorts of designs people are making these days. The one we have now has served it's time, I think it's time for an upgrade. :P

Yeah transitions are freaking awesome. It really takes CSS to that next level.

And a new journal HTML structure would be nice. I thought about making an installable skin a while back, and started doing it, but then learned that as soon as you make any custom CSS, you default back to that old HTML structure. I was assuming I could start with the white journal CSS/HTML, and then take it from there. But as soon as you start a skin, you go back to that old HTML. It really seems that HTML should go. I end up display:none;-ing so many things :slow:

Although on the bigger scope of things, it seems that journal skinning should be started from scratch. Make it all backwards compatible, but there's so many odd things with it now that it's just way too complicated and confusing and whatnot. It makes me want to create a video proposing a new way of adding skins to journals here (along with galleries), with live editing and everything.

:bulletgreen: Hm "Art memes". For me it sounds like only drawing or painting memes would be allowed. Especially when i think of the artisan craft meme i did it would feel to me, like it doesn't belong there. Maybe 'dA memes' instead? No idea D:

:bulletgreen: Is Zines still needed? Haven't seen much about Zines lately. But i think i asked that the last time already, haven't i? :B
Same for journal graphics. There is barely anything in there that makes sense or fits.

:bulletgreen: Really not sure if i would like the journal/gallery category changes :/
But i guess the majority likes it, right? There is just not enough gallery stuff to deserve an extra category imo.

I sound like an old grumpy lady fighting for her "good old categories", don't i?

And yes CSS community, where is you? :shifty:
Have an idea for another contest, but first i need to get the calendar project done. Then i can think about another contest. It's just so hard to reach out to all people who are interested in CSS.

:bulletblue: I feel like no matter what it's called, the Memes gallery will always be misused like that.

:bulletblue: I've been a bit reluctant to completely give a whole category the boot. I know there hasn't been a lot lately, but there's still some great Zines already submitted in there.

:bulletblue: Yeah, a lot of people wanted them split so that they could browse and search for gallery skins easier, as they're just hiding amongst journal skins at the moment.

It's okay, what I'm proposing is kind of a big change. I don't expect anyone to be comfortable with it straight away.

Indeed. I don't see much of the CSS community around anymore. :hmm: Hopefully your project and upcoming contest will get them out from hiding. :giggle:

:bulletgreen: I think "Art Memes" is okay because this is deviantART, right? :D Meaning anything which would be accepted into other galleries, would be accepted as a meme.

:bulletgreen: I agree with Zines not really being needed anymore. Also, I'm not quite sure what the Journal Graphics category is for. Is it for hosting images, or for sharing images other people can use? If for hosting, it's not necessary, because we can now use Sta.sh.

:bulletgreen: I think the new changes to these categories are good, because that way we can choose if we want a Journal skin, Gallery skin, or both, when browsing the categories. :D

I would love another contest. :P

Of course it's not much of a difference, it's just a personal preference :B

I think the original meaning was to share graphics that other people could use for their skins. Like stock images for photo manips. But tbh i am not really sure. Was pondering about it, since i have been a GM.

Browsing is easier, for sure - if people use the category right - but if there are one or two new gallery skins each month it is already "a lot". Alone from the amount of skins it is not really worth to have another category. And i am afraid it might be just another misused category. :/
